Novice Half-Ice Program
* Update #1 July 29 re: Royals Novice - Declarations and sorts * (see below)
* Update #2 December 12, 2019 re: link to new Novice OWHA Seasonal Structure (here)
KDMHA is still working on layouts with both UCMHL for Royals and with ODWHA for Storm. Although Hockey Canada has provided the framework for half-ice Novice, both Storm and Royals are also guided by their individual governing bodies and both are still working on logistics of game schedules across the many different associations.
We can give you some basic information, but specific details will not be available until closer to September. KDMHA is working hard to get the information as quickly as possible but there are many variables in getting full details on this inaugural season for half-ice Novice.

Royals
For Royals, the Novice Resource guide is available on Hockey Canada’s website here.
As in previous years, there will be a conditioning camp after Labour Day Weekend. The ice schedule will be shared soon! If you haven’t signed up for Conditioning Camp, please do so soon as space is limited. The registration form is available on the website here.
Once Rideau St Lawrence Kings Novice Tryouts are underway, Royals can start their Novice sort process.
Sorts will start towards the middle of September and be based on * (update #1) 20/60/20 split of Tier2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 teams. (Tier 1 is RSL Kings)
Teams will be evenly sorted based on:
- 75% Technical Skills
- 15% Individual Tactics
- 10%Team Tactics
Novice will form 2 phases:
Phase 1 – Developmental September 15 to October 31 will follow the approximate schedule of:
- 6 weeks
- 12 Practices
- 2 Games
- 0 Jamborees/Festivals
Phase 2 – Regular Season November 1 to March 22 will follow approximate schedule of:
- 20 weeks
- 38 practices
- 22 games
- 3 Jamborees/Festivals
Seasonal Practice to Game ratio will be 2:1 with maximum 2 or 3 ice sessions per week.
Royals Novice UCMHL teams will remain similar to previous years playing South Grenville, Brockville, Smiths Falls, North Dundas, South Dundas and Leeds.
There will be no playoffs for Novice, and the season would end by March 22.
We are still awaiting details from other Associations on team structures. Kemptville Royals are expecting to form teams of approximately 13 players (depending on final registration numbers). All players are able to try being a goalie; it is not an assigned position but intended to be rotational at this age level.
Game highlight details:
- half ice
- 4 on 4 player format, with one goalie for each team
- 3 Minute Warmup
- 50-minute ice schedule
- Two 22.5-minute half’s
- 90 second buzzer - players change on the fly
- Both teams will share a bench
- Two face offs - one at beginning and one at half time
- No scores are kept
Additional information will be shared as plans are finalized. Thank you for your patience!
Wishing you a great rest of your summer and see you soon at the rink!

For Storm, the Novice Resource guide is available on OWHA’s website (revised Dec. 12, 2019) here.
As in previous years, there will be a conditioning camp towards the end of August. The ice schedule will be shared on our website soon! If you haven’t signed up for Conditioning Camp, please do soon as space is limited. The registration form is available on the website here.
Based on current registration numbers, there will be two Storm Novice teams.
For the purposes of league play, Novice teams will play in a loop with similar West associations (Brockville, Carleton Place, Goulbourn and Smiths Falls).
It will not be possible to have variety of play for Major and Minor teams across the associations, so there will be two balanced Novice Storm teams for the upcoming season.
Storm Novice Sorts will be held:
- Saturday, Sept. 7 @9:30am and
- Sunday, Sept. 8 @9:30am
The draft layout for the upcoming season will have three phases:
(Note that this is STILL subject to change based on discussions among West associations)

Transition Phase or Game Play Phase: January 15 to March 29

- 8 full-ice games or 8 half-ice games (to be confirmed)
- up to 1 Jamboree (tournament)
There will be no playoffs for Novice, and the season would end by March 31.
Team sizes will be between 9 and 12 players (depending on final registration numbers). All players are able to try being a goalie; it is not an assigned position but intended to be rotational at this age level.
